Blue Ridge Writing Project (BRWP)

The Blue Ridge Writing Project aims to improve the teaching of writing and the use of writing to learn for all students in all disciplines from kindergarten through university. The BRWP, an affiliated site of the National Writing Project, assists teachers in Southwest Virginia through sponsored programs such as the Summer Institute.

The National Writing Project (NWP) is a professional development network that serves teachers of writing at all grade levels, primary through university, and in all subjects. The mission of the NWP is to improve student achievement by improving the teaching of writing and improving learning in the nation’s schools.

The goals of the NWP are:

  • To improve student writing and learning in K-12 and college classrooms
  • To extend the uses of writing to all disciplines
  • To provide schools, colleges, and universities with an effective staff development model
  • To identify, celebrate, and enhance the professional role of successful classroom teachers

Beginning this year, the BRWP will select 15 talented teachers across all disciplines and grade levels to receive fellowships to attend the intensive four-week Summer Institute. Fellows share their expertise and develop their writing abilities during the Institute and later serve as Teacher/Consultants in their own schools.

Teachers who use writing as a means to enhance student learning will find the Summer Institute very helpful even before they return to the classroom. SI participants will

  • Earn graduate course credit
  • Learn new, creative ways to incorporate writing into their own classrooms
  • Enhance leadership skills
  • Share writing resources with colleagues in the SI and in schools
  • Become liaisons between the BRWP and the area public school systems
  • Work to improve student writing at every level and subject.
