About Us

Our mission: To study the role of language in individual and social transformation.

Our vision: To advance the study of rhetoric and writing through projects and partnerships that promote the public good.

Our central research question: How do texts (digital, print, multimedia, visual, verbal) mediate knowledge and action in a variety of social and professional contexts?

The Center for the Study of Rhetoric in Society (CSRS) was formed in the Fall semester of 2006. One of our primary functions is to support the research of Virginia Tech Rhetoric and Writing faculty and graduate students. The CSRS can provide a space for collaboration, technology and tools to aid research, and financial support through our research awards program. Additionally, the CSRS offers grant writing services to nonprofit organizations through our community outreach program. We also sponsor university and community-wide events that support our mission.
